Trinity Independent Chapel, Grade II listed church building in Poplar, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, United Kingdom
Trinity Independent Chapel is a Grade II listed church building in Poplar that displays a blend of Grecian and Italian Renaissance architectural styles. The structure features a distinctive facade and contains a chapel hall along with several adjoining rooms for community use.
The original building was constructed in 1840 from designs by architect William Hosking and built by John Jay. A V-2 rocket destroyed it in 1944, after which the chapel was reconstructed in a modernist style.
The chapel was founded as a place where different Christian communities could gather without strict denominational boundaries. This open approach shaped religious life in Poplar and drew people from across East London.
The building is located at the intersection of East India Dock Road and Augusta Street, easily accessible in the area. Inside, there is a chapel hall along with multiple adjoining rooms that serve for worship and community gatherings.
The chapel's original bell survived the bombing destruction of World War II and was later integrated into the new rebuilt structure. This object connects the site's historical continuity with its modern rebirth after the war.
