St Matthias Old Church, Anglican church in Tower Hamlets, England
St Matthias Old Church is an Anglican place of worship in Tower Hamlets built with brick walls and stone corners, featuring eight columns that support a barrel-vaulted ceiling inside. The building shows clear structural design and has been maintained as a community space rather than an active religious site.
The East India Company built this chapel in 1654 in response to a request from residents of Poplar and Blackwall for a closer place of worship. It became an important religious landmark for these riverside communities during the period of maritime expansion.
The stained glass windows from the 1920s display Masonic symbolism and serve as a memorial to lodge members killed in the First World War. Visitors can see these windows today and appreciate the craftsmanship that went into creating them.
The building now operates as a community center managed by the St Matthias Conservation Trust, which was established in 1992 following restoration work. Visitors should check in advance about access and any special events or opening times at the site.
This building served as the final place of prayer for sailors and passengers departing on long voyages to British North America. It held special meaning for those undertaking perilous maritime journeys from these docks.
