Church of All Saints, Llanelli

Church of All Saints, Llanelli, Anglican parish church in Llanelli, Wales.

Description

Church of All Saints is an Anglican parish building in Llanelli, Wales, constructed with brown rubble-stone walls accented by Bath stone details and topped with green slate roofing. The structure includes a choir vestry and porch, following a traditional church layout protected as a Grade II listed building.

History

Renowned architect George Edmund Street designed this building in 1872, establishing its Victorian church character. His son A.E. Street later added a porch and choir vestry, expanding the structure with complementary architectural elements.

Culture

The interior features intricate carved stonework including a reredos with angels and a Crucifixion panel, representing how the congregation valued religious artistry and devotion. These details show how the church expressed faith through carefully crafted ornamental elements.

Practical

The building is not regularly open to visitors as it closed in 2011 and was subsequently sold by the Church in Wales. It is best viewed from outside the property, and checking its current status in advance is recommended before planning a visit.

Did you know?

This church was one of the most expensive buildings of its era to construct, yet its tower remained unfinished, giving it an incomplete appearance that still stands today. This unusual feature makes it a notable example of how ambitious Victorian projects sometimes fell short of their original ambitions.
