Garnddyrys Forge, Industrial forge ruins near Blaenavon, Wales

Garnddyrys Forge is the remains of an iron-working facility located on the northwest slope of Blorenge mountain at about 1,300 feet elevation. The site contains old furnace bases, sections of a rail transport line, and traces of a former pond that supplied water to the complex.

The forge was established in 1817 and converted pig iron into wrought iron bars and rails for industrial use. It was part of a larger network of works that made the Blaenavon area a center of Welsh iron production during the 1800s.

The site displays remains of workers' homes and a manager's residence, showing how people organized their lives during the industrial era. These structures reveal the social layers of a working community built around metal production.

The site can be reached by following a path that climbs the slope and connects different sections of the ruins and former pond areas. Visiting in dry weather is advisable since the ground is uneven and footways are unpaved.

The facility was connected to other works and a canal through an underground transport tunnel that moved raw materials and finished products across the landscape. This tunnel system was a clever engineering solution for moving heavy goods over difficult terrain.
