Oxford Island

Oxford Island, Nature reserve on Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland.

Oxford Island is a nature reserve on the southeastern shore of Lough Neagh with wetlands, woodlands, and scrubland covering several hundred acres. The site offers walking paths, bird watching hides, a cafe, and a working marina with mooring spaces.

What was once a true island became a peninsula when the lough's water level dropped in 1846. This transformation shaped the current landscape and the way the reserve functions today.

The Discovery Centre presents exhibitions that explain the wildlife and environment of the lough through interactive displays and educational programs. Visitors can learn how the different habitats support the region's natural life and why this place matters for conservation.

The reserve has five miles of marked walking paths and several bird watching areas spread across the grounds. Wear sturdy shoes since paths wind through wet grasslands and along the shoreline.

The reserve grazes traditional Irish cattle breeds that are rare in modern farming on its grasslands. These animals help maintain the open habitats and support the natural biodiversity of the site.
