Adak, Military port in Aleutian Islands, United States
Adak is a city on an island in the Aleutian chain of Alaska, covering around one hundred twenty square miles of land and water combined. The settlement sits on the southern shore of the island and features a harbor with access to the Pacific Ocean.
During the Second World War the island served as a military outpost for operations against Japanese troops further west in the Aleutians. After the war ended the site grew into a naval air station that remained active until 1997.

The airport receives scheduled flights from a regional airline and connects the place with mainland Alaska. The harbor can accommodate larger vessels and is used for cargo traffic.
After the closure of naval facilities in 1997 the population dropped from several thousand military personnel to fewer than two hundred civilian residents. Today many former barracks and administrative buildings stand empty or serve other purposes.
