Wise County is an administrative county in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, containing Powell Valley and High Knob within the Appalachian region. The terrain is hilly and forested, marked by valleys and ridges that shape the landscape throughout the area.
The county was created in 1856 from portions of the neighboring Lee, Scott, and Russell Counties. It took its name from Henry A. Wise, who was Virginia's governor at that time.
