Canobie Corkscrew, Steel roller coaster in Salem, United States
Canobie Corkscrew was a steel roller coaster that propelled riders through two consecutive corkscrew inversions at high speed. The ride featured a chain lift followed by sharp banking turns that created rapid rotation sensations throughout the journey.
The coaster opened in 1975 at a shopping mall in Illinois and was relocated to multiple locations over its lifetime. It arrived at Canobie Lake Park in 1987, where it operated for several decades before closure.
The roller coaster appeared in the 1978 film The Fury and later in promotional materials for the RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 video game.
The train carried 24 riders per cycle and reached speeds around 45 miles per hour (72 km/h). Riders experienced rapid inversions and sharp turns, so prior roller coaster experience was helpful for full enjoyment.
After the ride closed in 2021, sections of the corkscrew structure were donated to the National Roller Coaster Museum. This preservation effort saved important pieces of the coaster's legacy for future study and exhibition.
