Searles Castle, Gothic mansion in Windham, New Hampshire, United States.
Searles Castle is a granite and sandstone mansion set on a 175-acre estate in Windham. The building contains reception halls, grand staircases, and multiple guest rooms throughout its main floors and upper levels.
The castle was built starting in the early 1900s and completed in 1915 by architect Henry Vaughan. It was designed as an interpretation of an English country manor and represented a significant investment in construction.
The building served as a novitiate and educational center for young women from the early 1960s through the 1980s. The religious community shaped how many people used and remembered the space during those decades.
The castle currently operates as an event venue and may be accessible to visitors during scheduled occasions and tours. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the building and grounds cover considerable space to explore.
Much of the stone used in construction came from quarries owned by the estate's original owner in nearby Pelham. This local sourcing meant the massive granite and sandstone exterior could be built without distant supply chains.
