Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Symphony orchestra in Chicago, United States.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is a symphony orchestra with over one hundred musicians that holds its performances at Orchestra Hall on Michigan Avenue. The concert season runs from September through June and includes symphonic works from several centuries as well as premieres of new compositions.
Theodore Thomas founded the orchestra in 1891 and conducted its first concert at the Auditorium Theatre. The ensemble later moved to the specially built Orchestra Hall, where it has performed for over a century.
The ensemble selects its members through auditions held behind a screen, ensuring that only the sound matters. In addition to classical evenings, it organizes family and student concerts where young listeners can get closer to the instruments.
Orchestra Hall is located downtown on South Michigan Avenue and is easily accessible by public transport. Most concerts take place in the evening, though matinee performances are also offered.
The orchestra has released numerous recordings that rank among the best-selling classical releases worldwide. Several of these recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
