Consumers Building, Commercial building in Chicago Loop, United States.
The Consumers Building is a commercial skyscraper in Chicago's Loop district with 22 floors and a height of 291 feet. Its steel frame structure is wrapped in terracotta cladding that runs along the facade at 220 South State Street.
The building was completed in 1913 by architects Mundie & Jensen during a period when Chicago was establishing itself as a center of architectural innovation. This era shaped the development of modern tall buildings across North America.
The building sits in the Loop Retail Historic District and represents the Chicago School movement that shaped commercial design across North America. Its regular window grid and terracotta cladding show the direct, functional approach to design that defined this architectural era.
The building is visible from the street and stands prominently along South State Street in the heart of the commercial district. Current access is restricted, but the exterior architecture can be appreciated from the sidewalk.
In its early years, the building housed multiple film companies including Mutual and Universal within its walls. The Carnation Milk Company also maintained offices there throughout the 1920s.
