Second Leiter Building, Commercial building in Loop District, Chicago, United States.
The Second Leiter Building is an eight-story commercial structure in the Loop at State Street and Congress, constructed from brick, granite, steel, and glass. The structure spans an entire city block and features substantial floor space on each level.
Architect William Le Baron Jenney completed this structure in 1891 using innovative steel frame construction that influenced modern skyscraper development. The building witnessed Chicago's transformation from classical trading hub to a modern urban center.
The building housed major retailers including Siegel Cooper Company and later became the downtown flagship location for Sears, Roebuck and Company. It shaped shopping experiences for generations of Chicago residents and visitors.
The building is located at the corner of State Street and Congress and occupies an entire city block. Visitors can easily explore the facade and exterior on foot, with its central Loop location ensuring easy access.
The State Street facade features nine distinct bays separated by wide pilasters and topped with simple capitals. This design merges decorative elements with clear structural logic, setting the building apart from its neighbors.
