Silversmith Hotel, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Silversmith Hotel is a hotel in a historic ten-story building on Wabash Avenue in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The structure was built in the Chicago School style, with large windows and a steel frame that were typical of the city's late 19th-century commercial architecture.
The building was designed by architect Peter J. Weber and completed in 1896 to serve as a commercial hub for the jewelry trade. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and joined Historic Hotels of America in 2016.
The name Silversmith reflects the jewelry craftsmanship tradition that once defined this neighborhood. The building reminds visitors today of Chicago's past as a center for jewelry work and commerce.
The hotel sits on Wabash Avenue in the heart of downtown Chicago, which puts many theaters, shops, and city landmarks within walking distance. The elevated train runs nearby, making it easy to reach other parts of the city without a car.
The original design included an interior light court, a tall open shaft built to channel daylight down to the jewelry workshops on lower floors. That court is still part of the building today and gives the interior a sense of depth that most downtown hotels do not have.
