Melrose Park, Village in Cook County, Illinois, United States
Melrose Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, located in Chicago's northwestern suburban region. The community combines residential neighborhoods with commercial areas and sits at a slight elevation that slopes toward nearby waterways.
The area began as unincorporated land within Proviso Township before becoming Melrose in 1882, then adding Park to its name in 1893. This period marked the community's transition from rural township into a more defined settlement.
The population includes a substantial Latino community at 74.69%, followed by 26.48% White and 6.24% African American residents as of 2020.
The village is connected by the Union Pacific West Line, which provides transit to downtown Chicago and surrounding areas. The main roads can get busy during rush hours, so traveling during off-peak times offers easier navigation.
Kiddieland Amusement Park operated from 1929 until 2010 as a local family destination that shaped the area's recreational history. Its original sign is preserved and displayed at the Melrose Park Public Library.
