Alpine is a residential borough in New Jersey covering roughly 24 square kilometers and located about 24 kilometers north of Manhattan. The Palisades Interstate Park forms part of the municipal boundary and provides access to wooded cliffs along the Hudson River.
The borough formed on April 8, 1903, from portions of Harrington Township and expanded its territory the following year by acquiring a section of Cresskill. Before incorporation, the area was marked by large private estates established along the river during the late 19th century.
The borough grew from historic estates along the Hudson River and now maintains a quiet residential character among wooded hillsides. Many streets wind through heavily forested terrain with views toward the opposite shore.
The borough offers online payment for property taxes, with electronic checks costing $1.95 and card payments requiring a 2.95 percent processing fee. Many streets are winding and pass through hilly forested sections, so careful driving is advisable.
