Bergen County, County in northeastern New Jersey, United States.
Bergen County is a county in northeastern New Jersey spanning 70 municipalities, with Hackensack serving as the administrative center. The municipalities include 56 boroughs, 9 townships, 3 cities and 2 villages that together form a densely populated region.
The establishment occurred on March 7, 1683, making this one of the oldest counties in New Jersey. Over the centuries it evolved from farmland into a densely populated suburban area.
The name comes from either Bergen in Norway or Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands. Today the municipalities show a strong mix of European, Asian, Latin American and African influences in daily life.
The county maintains over 9,000 acres of public parks and natural areas such as Ramapo Mountain State Forest and Van Saun County Park. Many parks offer hiking trails, picnic areas and sports facilities that remain accessible year-round.
Paramus hosts several large shopping centers that rank among the highest revenue-generating retail destinations in the entire region. On Sundays most stores there remain closed, which is an unusual feature for a commercial center.
