Central Park Tower is a residential supertall skyscraper at 217 West 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan, rising 1,550 feet (472.4 m) with 98 above-ground stories. Its light gray and glass facade has broad vertical sections of blue glass and darker slots, and a lower attached section with a pale gridded exterior of small rectangular windows. The tower stands one block south of Central Park, behind a screen of leafy trees.
The site was assembled in the first decade of the 2000s; plans to give 1780 Broadway and 225 West 57th Street landmark status delayed the project, first made public in May 2011. Excavation began in May 2014 and above-ground work in early 2015, with German sources citing July 2014. Developed by Extell with Shanghai Municipal Investment Group, it topped out in September 2019 and was completed in 2020 at a cost of $3 billion.
The tower's name was changed from Nordstrom Tower to Central Park Tower in June 2015, reflecting its position one block south of the park. Its 179 condominiums, from the 32nd floor upward, include a three-story penthouse spanning the 129th to 131st floors, marketed at $250 million. The 100th-floor private club, called The 100th Floor, contains a 126-person dance room and a cigar bar.
The building shares its base with a Nordstrom department store that occupies the first five floors, while residential units begin above. Visitors can view the exterior from street level, but access to residential areas is restricted to residents only.
The structure uses a cantilever design that extends over the neighboring Art Students League building, allowing maximum views toward Central Park. This engineering solution made it possible to build a narrower tower on a smaller plot.
