220 Central Park South, Residential skyscraper on Billionaires' Row, Midtown Manhattan, United States
220 Central Park South is a skyscraper and residential building in Midtown Manhattan with 70 floors. The tower rises 290.2 meters high and combines postmodern elements with Art Deco references in its limestone facade of concrete, granite, and glass.
Vornado Realty Trust acquired the property in 2005 and had to fend off lawsuits from tenants until 2012 before an apartment complex from 1954 was demolished. Construction ended in 2019 after years of planning and execution.
The limestone recalls earlier New York residential towers and gives the facade a timeless presence among the glass buildings of the neighborhood. Residents appreciate the combination of classical appearance and modern facilities such as the athletic club and wine cellar.
Access is limited to residents and their guests, but viewing from outside along Central Park South is straightforward. The main facade is best seen during daylight when the light highlights the limestone surface.
Kenneth C. Griffin acquired a residence here for 238 million dollars, representing the highest price ever paid for a home in the United States. This record sale made the building known worldwide and set new standards in the luxury real estate market.
