The Sofia, Art Deco skyscraper in Upper West Side, United States
The Sofia is a 24-story residential tower in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, rising to about 285 feet (87 m) in the Art Deco style. Its facade features geometric reliefs and decorative stonework arranged in the layered, vertical composition that defines that architectural style.
The building was originally constructed as a warehouse and completed in 1930, at a time when Art Deco was reshaping the look of New York's skyline. It was later converted to residential use and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as recognized as a New York City Landmark.
The ornamental details on the facade, including geometric reliefs and decorative stonework, are easy to spot from the street and give the building a character that stands out in the neighborhood. For many New Yorkers, a converted warehouse turned residential address carries a certain cachet that purely purpose-built apartment towers do not.
The Sofia sits in the Upper West Side, a neighborhood where most daily needs and points of interest are within easy walking distance, including Central Park. Visitors who want to see the exterior can simply walk by, since the facade is best viewed from the street at a short distance.
Although the building was designed as a warehouse, its facade received the same level of ornamental detail that was usually reserved for office towers or hotels of the era. That choice is part of the reason it was eventually granted landmark status rather than being torn down or stripped of its original character.
