200 Central Park South, Residential building on Central Park South, Manhattan, United States
200 Central Park South is a 35-story residential tower with a curved exterior that faces the park directly. The building contains 309 apartments, each benefiting from the distinctive shape that provides sightlines to both the green space and the cityscape beyond.
Bernard Spitzer and Melvin Lipman developed this residential structure in 1963 based on designs by Wechsler & Schimenti architects. The curved design became an immediate landmark on the park's south boundary, distinguishing it from the surrounding architecture of that era.
The building attracted numerous notable residents including actress Raquel Welch, producer Dino De Laurentiis, weather presenter Al Roker, and basketball player Bill Bradley.
The building provides round-the-clock doormen, elevator operators, concierge services, valet parking, and automated mail systems for residents. Access is limited to invited guests since this is a private residential property not open to the general public.
The building's curved shape originated from a spontaneous moment when the developer threw a pencil across his desk and observed the arc it created. This accidental inspiration became the foundation for an architectural concept that would define the property.
