Katahdin, Granite mountain peak in Piscataquis County, United States.

Mount Katahdin reaches 1,606 meters in elevation, forming a massive granite formation that dominates the Maine landscape as its highest point.

The first documented ascent occurred in August 1804 when surveyors Zackery Adley and Charles Turner Jr climbed the mountain with Native American guides.

The name originates from Penobscot Native American language, reflecting the indigenous recognition of its physical magnitude within their ancestral lands.

Hiking access operates seasonally from May 15 to October 15, with strict regulations controlling winter activities due to severe weather conditions.

The mountain serves as the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, featuring a narrow ridge called Knife Edge that connects multiple summit peaks.
