Hamlin Peak

Hamlin Peak, Mountain summit in Baxter State Park, Maine, United States.

Hamlin Peak rises to 4,756 feet (1,450 m) in the northern section of Baxter State Park and features exposed rock formations and alpine vegetation. The terrain is marked by ridges that offer broad views across surrounding mountains and valleys.

The summit was named after Hannibal Hamlin, who served as Vice President under Abraham Lincoln from 1861 to 1865. This naming reflects the American tradition of honoring significant historical figures through geographic locations.

This peak is part of the Mount Katahdin massif and holds spiritual significance for the Penobscot people of Maine.

Access is via the Hamlin Ridge Trail, a challenging hike that requires good physical fitness and mountain experience. Visitors should familiarize themselves with Baxter State Park regulations and be prepared to adjust plans if weather or conditions change.

The massif drains to the south and east, with water from the southeast face flowing through Great Basin into the Penobscot River system. These hydrological connections link the mountain to distant regions all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
