Kineo Cottage Row Historic District, Historic summer resort district in Northeast Piscataquis, Maine.
The Kineo Cottage Row Historic District contains seven summer cottages situated on a peninsula extending into Moosehead Lake, which is the largest waterbody in New England. These buildings were constructed between 1900 and 1912 as part of the Mount Kineo resort complex.
The cottages were built in the early 1900s as seasonal homes for wealthy visitors and are among the few remaining structures from the Mount Kineo resort complex. The location was part of Maine's early tourism development during that era.
The cottages display Shingle style architecture blended with Queen Anne and Dutch Colonial Revival elements, showing what wealthy summer visitors preferred in their seasonal homes. This mix of styles was typical for high-end resort areas of that era.
The seven cottages are now organized as a condominium association and can be viewed from outside as part of the historic district. The waterfront location offers views of the lake, though the peninsula setting means fewer nearby amenities for visitors.
The Fir Cottage at the northern end of the row features the original Coombs and Gibbs design that influenced how the other buildings were constructed. This single house set the architectural direction for the entire row.
