Paradise Theater, Historic movie palace and entertainment venue on Grand Concourse, The Bronx, United States.
Paradise Theater is a movie palace and performance venue in The Bronx featuring Italian Baroque architecture with marble fountains and classical paintings throughout. The ornate ceiling depicts a night sky complete with stars, and the space accommodates around 3,885 people.
The theater opened in 1929 and was one of five luxury cinemas built by the Loews cinema chain known as the Wonder Theaters. These venues represented a new approach to entertainment architecture in urban neighborhoods during that era.
The theater served as a gathering place where neighborhood residents came together to experience film and live music in a grand setting. Its ornate interior design made each visit feel like a special occasion, transforming entertainment into something ceremonial.
The theater sits on Grand Concourse and is accessible by public transportation. Visitors should allow time to appreciate the elaborate interior details, as there is much to take in throughout the space.
This is the only remaining atmospheric movie theater in New York City, where the ceiling and walls are designed to make visitors feel as if they are outdoors under a starry sky. This design approach was popular in the 1920s, but few theaters of this style have survived to the present day.
