University Woods

University Woods is a woodland park in the Bronx covering about 3 acres between two major avenues, with walking trails winding through stands of mature trees. The site slopes downward and is connected by a two-tiered pathway system that links the upper and lower portions.

Stone walls within the woods date to the American Revolutionary War when British forces constructed fortifications in this location. These walls represent remnants of 18th-century military operations in the region.

The woods serve as a gathering place where neighbors walk under mature trees and rest in quiet corners away from the street. People use it for simple moments of refreshment in their daily routines.

The park is accessible from both Cedar Avenue at the upper level and Sedgwick Avenue at the lower level, allowing visitors to enter and exit from either side. It is helpful to plan a walk that moves between the two levels to experience the full slope of the land.

The site underwent major restoration by a local advocacy group starting in the early 2000s after decades of neglect had left it in poor condition. This turnaround demonstrates what happens when neighbors take direct action to reclaim a forgotten space.
