Sentinel Island Light

Sentinel Island Light is a concrete lighthouse located at the northern entrance to Favorite Channel near Juneau. The structure features a square tower with white exterior walls and a red lantern room on top.

The original wooden lighthouse was built in 1902 and replaced with a modern concrete structure in 1935. This reconstruction reflected wider efforts to upgrade navigational aids throughout Alaska.

The lighthouse serves as a navigation landmark for the shipping routes passing through this waterway. It reflects the maritime traditions of Alaska and the practical needs of coastal communities.

The lighthouse sits on an island location accessible primarily by water. Visitors can view it best during boat tours through the channel or from vessels navigating these waters.

In 1910 the steamship Princess May ran aground on rocks near this lighthouse and remained stranded for a month. The incident highlights the challenging conditions of navigating these Alaskan waters.
