101 Clarendon Street, Skyscraper project in Back Bay, Boston, US
101 Clarendon Street is a 35-story glass high-rise in Back Bay, Boston, rising 420 feet (128 meters) above the Massachusetts Turnpike. The project sits between Back Bay Station and Copley Square and includes plans to cover sections of the highway below.
The development began as Columbus Center but paused in 2008 when developers sought 35 million dollars in state funding and loans. California's pension system withdrew its financial backing in 2010, leaving the 800 million dollar project stalled and incomplete.
The building connects Back Bay and South End neighborhoods through a mixed-use structure that brings together residential, hotel, and retail functions in one location.
The site is located in a well-connected area between two major transit hubs, making access by public transportation straightforward. Visitors should know that the development sits above a highway and the construction site or finished building may not always be open to the public.
The development was designed to cover portions of the underground Massachusetts Turnpike, an innovative approach to reconnecting a neighborhood divided by the highway. This idea of bridging over traffic while creating new urban space was a rare attempt at urban repair for its time.
