Augustana Swedish Lutheran Church

Augustana Swedish Lutheran Church is a church building in Claremont, South Dakota, constructed by Swedish Lutheran immigrants. The structure features a modified nave plan with a tall steeple, Gothic-inspired design, and an elevated pulpit above the main floor.

Swedish Lutheran immigrants built the church in 1899, and it was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The building received major upgrades in 1911, including a basement and a pipe organ installation.

The congregation used Swedish for religious services until 1925, showing how much the community valued its Scandinavian roots. You can still sense this heritage in the way the building and its interior reflect those traditions.

The building sits on a small plot of land in Brown County and is straightforward to locate. You will see well-preserved architectural details from the original construction as well as improvements made over time.

William Carlson oversaw the construction of this building, which reflects the story of Swedish immigration in the region. The pipe organ installed in 1911 is a rare surviving example from that era.
