Fisher Hall, Georgian style university building in Oxford, Ohio.
Fisher Hall is a Georgian-style building at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, featuring a symmetrical facade, double-hung windows, and classical proportions. The three-story structure has a T-shaped floor plan with multiple entry porches and contained a ballroom on the upper floor.
The building opened in 1856 as Oxford Female College, serving women students during a period when such institutions were less common. The structure later served as a sanitarium before Miami University acquired it in 1925 to house students.
The building reflects how 19th-century educational institutions valued both intellectual development and social refinement for their students. Its layout with multiple entry spaces and communal areas shows the importance placed on structured social interaction in academic life of that era.
The building is not open to the public today, having closed completely in 1968, so viewing is limited to the exterior. The university grounds provide enough space to walk around and appreciate the architectural features from outside.
In April 1953, student Ronald Tammen vanished from the building without trace, leaving his belongings in his room and never reappearing. This unsolved case has remained a mystery on campus that long-time members of the community still recall.
