Fort Custer Recreation Area, Natural recreation area in Kalamazoo County, United States.
Fort Custer Recreation Area is a protected outdoor space in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, made up of forests, several lakes, and a network of trails. The terrain changes across the area, offering conditions suited to hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, and camping.
The land was acquired by the government in 1917 to serve as a military training ground, and it was used under the name Camp Custer during World War II. In 1971, the federal government handed the property over to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for public use.
Fort Custer is a place where local families and outdoor enthusiasts return throughout the year, drawn by the trails, lakes, and campgrounds that feel familiar and well-used. On weekends, the area fills with people fishing from the shoreline, riding horses along dirt paths, or setting up tents in the campgrounds.
The area has campgrounds, picnic spots, and marked trails suited to different activities, so it helps to decide in advance what you want to do and which section of the park to head to. Winter conditions can make some trails harder to use, so dressing in warm layers is a good idea during colder months.
Skijoring, a winter activity in which a person on skis is pulled across snow by a dog or horse, is practiced here and draws a dedicated group of participants each season. This sport is rarely found outside parts of northern Europe and a handful of US locations, making this one of the few spots in Michigan where it can be experienced.
