W. K. Kellogg House, Prairie School house in Battle Creek, US.
The W. K. Kellogg House is a Prairie School-style residence in Battle Creek, Michigan, built with a T-shaped floor plan and a slate-covered hip roof. The facade features wide roof overhangs, round-head dormers, and French doors with transoms running across the front elevation.
The house was built for Will Keith Kellogg, who founded his cereal company in Battle Creek after developing a method for making grain flakes. In 1990 the building was moved from its original location on West Van Buren Street to its current site on Monroe Street.
The house shows how successful business owners in early 20th century Michigan chose to live and what design values mattered to them. The Prairie School style reflects in the way the structure sits on the land with broad lines and open proportions that suggest a relaxed, generous way of living.
The house sits on Monroe Street close to the W. K. Kellogg Foundation headquarters, which makes it easy to find when navigating the area. The exterior details are clearly visible from the sidewalk, so the architecture can be appreciated without stepping onto the grounds.
Although the building was physically relocated in 1990, the original stucco exterior survived the move and still shows the surface texture from when it was first built. Inside, the floor plan retains the parlor and dining spaces arranged as they were in the 1920s.
