Battle Creek, Industrial city in Michigan, United States
Battle Creek is a city in the northwestern part of Calhoun County, where the Battle Creek River joins the Kalamazoo River. Residential neighborhoods and commercial districts spread along both river valleys and into the surrounding hills.
Sands McCamly founded the settlement in 1831 along the Battle Creek River, and nine years later the place gained village status. Over the following decades, the community developed into a center for the food industry and grew into a city.
The old nickname "Cereal City" comes from several breakfast cereal manufacturers that began producing here in the late 19th century. Many residents still work in the food industry, and local festivals often celebrate this tradition.
The city has several parks and recreation areas spread throughout, which work well for walking or picnics. Most public facilities are located downtown and in the adjacent residential neighborhoods.
The Adventist community founded its first hospital, college, and publishing house in this city during the 19th century. These institutions shaped the development of the community for decades and drew many believers here.
