Fort Heath

Fort Heath is a sea fort in Winthrop, Massachusetts, built with three artillery emplacements for coastal defense. The site now contains a small park featuring a commemorative wall and informational markers about its military past.

The fort was built in 1898 as part of coastal defense improvements and guarded Boston harbor and its surroundings. It remained in military use until 1966 when it was eventually converted into residential space.

The fort shows military building methods that were developed along the American coast to protect harbors. Visitors can see the massive structures that once housed large artillery pieces.

The site is open to visitors and accessible through the small park area with clear views of the historical structures. Keep in mind that residential buildings now surround portions of the original fortifications.

After the fort closed as a military installation, the site was transformed into residential apartments while preserving some of the original gun emplacements and walls. This blend of defense history and modern housing creates an unusual setting.
