Goodsell Observatory

Goodsell Observatory is a brick building with a distinctive dome roof in Northfield, housing two historic telescopes and featuring Romanesque Revival architectural details. Inside, a computer imaging laboratory supports the college's astronomy instruction and student research.

Built in 1887, the structure served as the primary timekeeping station for railroad operations west of the Mississippi River until World War II. This role was essential for coordinating train schedules across the early American rail network.

The observatory remains an active learning space for Carleton College astronomy students, where visitors can see how scientific research happens today. The building bridges its past role with current educational use.
