Goodsell Observatory, Astronomical observatory at Carleton College, Northfield, US
The brick and brownstone building features a high dome housing two historic telescopes, with round-arched doors and Romanesque Revival architectural elements.
Built in 1887, Goodsell Observatory served as the primary timekeeping station for railroad operations west of the Mississippi River until World War II.
The observatory maintains a collection of vintage scientific equipment from the 1800s, including a meridian circle used for astronomical measurements and timekeeping.
The facility provides monthly public viewing sessions and contains a computer imaging laboratory used by astronomy students at Carleton College.
At the time of its construction, this observatory ranked as the sixth largest in the United States and the twelfth largest worldwide.
