Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve, Nature reserve in central Florida, United States.
Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve is a nature reserve in central Florida covering around 110,000 acres with various habitat types such as sandhills and cypress ponds. The land combines wetlands, flat plains, and low ridges together, creating a patchwork landscape with different plant and animal habitats.
The preserve was established in the 1970s when the Southwest Florida Water Management District began purchasing land in the Green Swamp region. This early conservation effort aimed to protect ecological resources from increasing pressure by development and agriculture.
The preserve shows the natural diversity of central Florida with open wetlands and pine forests that visitors can explore on marked trails. The place embodies a type of wild Florida as it once existed before human settlement transformed large parts of the region.
The area has about 65 miles (105 kilometers) of trails that can be used for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. For visitors who want to stay overnight, camping areas are available but require advance booking.
The preserve serves as the source for four major Florida rivers: the Withlacoochee, Ocklawaha, Hillsborough, and Peace. At the same time, it feeds the large Floridan Aquifer System and plays a key role in freshwater supply for the entire region.
