Withlacoochee State Forest, State forest in western central Florida, United States.

Withlacoochee State Forest is a state forest in west-central Florida made up of several separate land sections rather than a single continuous block. The terrain shifts from dry pine flatwoods to hardwood swamps and wetland corridors that cross the area.

The land was bought by the federal government in the late 1930s through a resettlement program that was meant to help struggling farming communities. Over time, the area was transferred to state forest management and has remained public land ever since.

The name Withlacoochee comes from a Native American word meaning something close to "little big river." Visitors come across this name on trail signs and maps throughout the forest, connecting the landscape to its Indigenous past.

The forest has several entry points with parking and information stations where maps and trail guides are available. Because the forest is made up of separate sections spread across a wide area, it helps to decide in advance which part to visit.

Within the forest lie the remains of several abandoned settlements, including places once known as Mannfield, Orleans, and Stage Pond, where people lived before the land became public. Traces of these communities can still be found by those who walk the older trails and look closely at the land.
