Withlacoochee State Trail

The Withlacoochee State Trail is a converted railroad corridor stretching 46 miles through three counties in central Florida. Its paved surface passes through varied landscapes including open areas, woodlands, and wetlands.

The land was originally part of a railroad route that operated until 1987, when the tracks were removed. The corridor was then transformed into a public recreation path accessible for various outdoor activities.

The surrounding communities host regular cycling events and nature programs that bring residents and visitors together for outdoor activities. These gatherings use the trail as a meeting point where people connect with their region and with each other.

Several trailheads with parking and restroom facilities are located along the route, including Gulf Junction, Owensboro, and Hernando stations. The flat terrain and wide, stable surface accommodate walkers, cyclists, and horseback riders.

The path crosses six different natural habitats of Florida, ranging from dry pine forest areas to wet swamp landscapes. This variety lets visitors observe the region's typical plants and wildlife without needing specialized hiking gear.
