The white conical tower of Grosse Point Light rises 113 feet above Lake Michigan, featuring a second order Fresnel lens that guides vessels.
The lighthouse construction started in 1872 under architect Orlando Metcalfe Poe and began operating in 1873 following several shipping accidents near Evanston.
The lighthouse serves as an educational center where visitors learn about maritime navigation and the development of Great Lakes shipping routes.
Tours of the lighthouse run on weekends from June through September, with admission costing 15 dollars for adults and 8 dollars for children.
The keeper Edwin James Moore maintained the lighthouse for 36 years from 1888 until 1924, marking the longest service period at this station.
