Hampton Heights

Hampton Heights is a historic residential district in Spartanburg with Victorian and Craftsman-style homes built between 1885 and 1930. The neighborhood spreads across a large area with tree-lined streets and contains many houses from this period.

The neighborhood began in the 1890s on former farmland as Spartanburg experienced rapid growth and industrial expansion. Well-to-do families moved here seeking residential space away from the city center during this period of prosperity.

The homes display architectural styles that wealthy families favored in the late 1800s and how the city developed during that period. Walking through, you notice consistent design elements like wide porches and decorative woodwork that reflect how residents lived at the time.

The area is bounded by four main streets: Spring, Henry, Hydrick, and Peronneau, making it easy to walk and explore. The homes are protected by preservation standards, so historical architectural details remain well-maintained throughout.

The Irwin House was among the first structures built here and displays the building style that shaped the entire neighborhood. This home set a pattern that many other properties followed when they were later constructed.
