Hills and Dales Estate, Historic residence and garden museum in LaGrange, United States.
Hills and Dales Estate is an Italian-inspired mansion with white stucco walls and red tile roofs, completed in 1916 and spanning about 13,000 square feet of living space. The property is surrounded by formal gardens with boxwood patterns that spread across the entire grounds.
The estate was built in 1916 for textile industrialist Fuller Callaway and incorporated the preexisting Ferrell Gardens from 1832. These older gardens had been transformed from cotton fields into formal spaces starting in 1841 by Sarah Ferrell.
The mansion displays design choices made by its wealthy residents, featuring a double staircase, stone fireplaces, and a palm room with vaulted ceilings. Visitors can observe how early American elites furnished their homes and what European styles they favored.
Visitors can tour the property by booking guided visits offered on multiple days throughout the week. It is wise to check exact opening times beforehand and allow sufficient time to see both the house and gardens.
The gardens contain religious symbols that Sarah Ferrell intentionally incorporated into the design when she first developed the spaces starting in 1841. These hidden spiritual elements add a surprising layer to the garden layout that visitors often miss.
