Callaway Gardens, Botanical garden and protected area in Pine Mountain, Georgia, US.
Callaway Gardens is a botanical garden and protected area in Pine Mountain, Georgia, spreading over roughly 1012 hectares (2500 acres) and including several themed gardens and nature trails. A bicycle path of about 16 kilometers (10 miles) winds through rolling landscape at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains and connects different sections of the grounds.
Cason J. Callaway and his wife founded this retreat in 1952 to create a place for horticulture and nature conservation. Since then, the grounds grew steadily and evolved into a center for environmental education in the region.
The center focuses on teaching about local plants and animals, with visitors often joining guided walks or browsing displays. In the butterfly house, tropical species flutter between blooms and people, delighting children especially.
The site opens daily from 9 AM to 5 PM and offers numerous restaurants as well as lodgings for longer stays. Equipment for outdoor activities can be rented on-site, making day trips or multi-day visits easier.
Robin Lake Beach offers a white sand shoreline in the middle of inland Georgia, where visitors swim and practice water sports in summer. The sand originally came from Florida and was brought here to create this unusual swimming spot.
