Little White House, Presidential retreat in Warm Springs, United States
The Little White House is a six-room residence in southern Georgia that the president used as a private retreat. The pine structure contains bedrooms, a living area, and a small workspace, still arranged as they were during his lifetime.
The president built the house in 1932 near the warm springs he visited to treat his paralysis. He died here in April 1945 during his final stay and the building was preserved as a historic site shortly after.
Most visitors notice the simple furnishings and personal belongings of the president, kept just as he left them. His adapted automobile sits beside the building and shows the technical modifications needed for him to drive himself.
Visits happen in small groups with a guide who walks through all rooms of the house. The site sits outside the town center and having your own vehicle makes reaching it much easier.
The president had a kitchen built with low counters so his cook could work from a wheelchair. The unfinished portrait on the easel still shows the wet brushstrokes from the day of his death.
