The property, purchased in 1846 by Sardis Birchard, became the residence of the 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes from 1873 until his death in 1893.
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library at Spiegel Grove, established in 1916, holds 90,000 books and documents about the Gilded Age period.
Visitors can explore the mansion museum, which displays period furniture and artifacts, while the grounds feature walking paths through landscaped gardens.
The estate name derives from German words reflecting water pools that form on the property after rain, creating mirror-like surfaces between the trees.
