Schedel Arboretum and Gardens, Botanical garden in Elmore, United States.
Schedel Arboretum is a botanical garden on a 17-acre property with a diverse collection of plant species, including 25 varieties of maple trees and multiple flowering plants and shrubs. The grounds also feature a Victorian mansion that serves as the centerpiece of the entire estate.
Joseph and Marie Schedel purchased the undeveloped property with its Victorian mansion in 1929 and later established a foundation to ensure its preservation. This foundation allowed the estate to remain intact and accessible for future generations.
The gardens blend English garden design with Japanese style features including bridges, stone lanterns, and flowing water elements throughout the grounds. Visitors experience these different design traditions as they walk through the various planted areas.
The arboretum operates seasonally and is situated on an estate with paths for exploring the grounds on foot. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow adequate time to walk through the different planted areas.
The estate has housed the Blair Museum of Lithophanes since 2021, displaying the world's largest collection of porcelain light-revealing artworks. These special objects reveal hidden images only when light shines through them from behind.
