Seneca Caverns, Show cave in Flat Rock, United States.
Seneca Caverns is an underground cave system with seven accessible levels that descend to depths of about 110 feet and feature limestone formations and irregular chambers throughout. The complex contains multiple rooms and passages shaped by natural geological processes.
The cave was discovered in 1872 when two young hunters fell through an opening in a brush pile while pursuing rabbits. The site was originally called after the property owner before receiving its current name decades later.
The site takes its name from Chief John Seneca, honoring a historical figure from the region. This naming choice connects visitors to the area's indigenous heritage when they explore the cave.
Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the paths are uneven and can be slippery in places. Bringing a light jacket is wise because the temperature inside remains cool year-round.
An underground stream called Ole' Mist'ry River flows through the lower levels and connects to a broader regional groundwater system. This hidden waterway adds another dimension to what makes the place geologically special.
