Hillside Haven Mound

Hillside Haven Mound is an earthen structure at an original hillside location surrounded by dense forest. The rounded formation measures roughly 33 feet (10 m) across and rises about 2.5 feet (0.8 m) above ground level.

Researchers from Wilmington College discovered pottery fragments near the mound during test digs, linking it to the Adena culture. The archaeological evidence suggests construction occurred between 800 BCE and 100 CE.

The mound reflects how ancient communities honored their deceased and marked resting places with earth constructions. The site shows burial practices that held deep meaning for the people who created it.

The mound sits along a marked trail making it accessible to visitors who can walk the wooded area. Proper footwear for natural terrain and awareness of forest conditions will help with comfortable exploration.

The mound remains in its original form without systematic excavation, making it rare among similar sites in the county. This undisturbed state helps preserve clues about how these structures were built and used.
