Hyattsville Armory, arsenaal in Maryland, Verenigde Staten van Amerika
Hyattsville Armory is an arsenal in Hyattsville, Maryland, built in 1918 with a fortress-like design featuring local stone walls and square towers flanking a large limestone archway entry. The structure includes a main assembly hall with windows and doors, offices, a garage, and a stage, with stone walls reinforced by buttresses.
Built in 1918, Hyattsville Armory was the first military building of its kind in Prince George's County and the fifth in Maryland. Architect Robert Lawrence Harris designed it under Governor Albert C. Ritchie, establishing a model for similar structures built across the state.
The building served as a gathering place for the community beyond its military role, hosting a restaurant and shops before becoming a church. This transformation shows how locals adapted the space to meet changing community needs while preserving its presence as a landmark.
The building is easily recognized from Baltimore Avenue due to its fortress-like appearance and elevated position. Visitors can view the exterior and interior, though the church now operating it does not host weddings on the premises.
The structure was modeled after Windsor Castle but scaled down to fit Maryland's needs. The military unit stationed here played a significant role in establishing the American Legion, a major United States veterans organization.
