Bladensburg Dueling Grounds, Historic dueling site in Colmar Manor, United States.
The Bladensburg Dueling Grounds occupy a natural area along a creek, featuring open grasslands crisscrossed by walking paths. Historical markers scattered throughout provide detailed accounts of the conflicts that took place here.
From 1808 to 1868, this location hosted around 50 documented duels involving politicians and military officers from nearby Washington DC. Personal insults and political rivalries frequently led men to settle their differences through armed confrontation.
The site reflects early American codes of honor, where formal armed confrontations were seen as a way to settle personal disputes between men of standing. Today, visitors walk the same grasslands where these practices were once carried out.
The grounds are accessible from Bladensburg Road near 38th Avenue with clear walking routes for visitors. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain, as portions of the site retain its natural condition.
The adjacent creek carries the name Blood Run, earned through the numerous fatal encounters that occurred along its banks. This striking name serves as a stark reminder of the serious and often deadly nature of these confrontations.
