Between 1808 and 1868, the grounds served as a location for fifty documented duels between politicians and military officers from nearby Washington DC.

Visitors can access the grounds through Bladensburg Road near 38th Avenue, with multiple historical markers providing information about past events.
The adjacent creek earned the name Blood Run due to the numerous fatal encounters that took place along its banks.
