Mayfair Mansions Apartments, Historic apartment complex in Northeast quadrant, Washington, D.C.
Mayfair Mansions Apartments is a residential complex in Northeast Washington D.C. with 17 buildings arranged around a central plaza. The entire property spans 28 acres and contains more than 570 residential units distributed across several sections.
The complex was built between 1942 and 1946 and was the first privately developed multi-family housing project insured by the Federal Housing Administration for Black tenants. This development represented a major shift in housing opportunities available to Black residents after World War II.
The name Mayfair Mansions reflects the upscale living standards created for its residents. The spacious layouts and carefully designed common areas show the commitment to providing dignified housing.
The complex is an active residential area with walkways that lead through landscaped spaces and visible play areas. When exploring, use the publicly accessible outdoor areas and be mindful of residents' privacy.
The buildings occupy only 18 percent of the property, leaving the rest covered with wide courtyards, landscaped areas, and play spaces. This generous space design was unusual for housing projects of this size and price point when it was built.
