Langston Golf Course, Historic golf course in Northeast Washington DC, United States
Langston Golf Course is an 18-hole facility in Northeast Washington, DC, situated along the Anacostia River with rolling terrain throughout. The front nine features water hazards and elevation changes, with the back nine incorporating the landscape near Kingman Island.
This course was founded in 1939 and became one of the earliest places in Washington, DC, where golfers of different races could play together. Its addition to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 formally recognized its importance in American sports history.
This golf course was named after John Mercer Langston, the first African American Congressman from Virginia, and served as a key gathering place for black golfers during segregation. The layout and facilities today still reflect its importance as a community landmark.
The facility includes a practice range with modern hitting technology, a pro shop for equipment needs, and a putting green for warm-up shots. On-site dining makes it convenient to spend a full day without leaving the grounds.
Notable figures like boxer Joe Louis and baseball player Maury Wills played rounds here, making it a gathering spot for black sports legends. Their presence added to the course's reputation as a place where athletes of prominence came to enjoy the game.
